Top Tips for Safe Online Shopping

National Consumer Week kicks off on November 16, an annual campaign that aims to raise awareness of issues that consumers are experiencing nationwide. This year’s campaign theme is online shopping and delivery, so we at Citizens Advice Manchester are sharing our top tips for being a safe shopper online. Whether you’re getting a head start on your Christmas shopping, or ordering essentials during lockdown, it’s important to know how to stay safe while purchasing online.

Between the March lockdown and August 2020, the number of cases reported to our national consumer service relating to online shopping went up by nearly 80%. It’s more important than ever to be aware of your rights when shopping online, and what to do if something goes wrong.

1.Know your rights

When shopping online, consumers have specific rights, just like when shopping in a store - but those rights can differ. Being aware of your rights when shopping online can help you to shop safely, as well as to make decisions when something goes wrong. You can find more information about your consumer rights when shopping online here.

2.Check delivery policies

Shopping online can be convenient, but it’s worth checking the delivery time and cost before completing your purchase. It can also be useful to check whether there will be any return postage charges if you decide to send your order back. This can avoid any nasty surprises once you’ve checked out. If something does go wrong, you can get help and information here.

3.Know what to do if there’s a delay

If your parcel is late or goes missing, it’s important to remember to contact the trader or online shop where you made your purchase, rather than the courier company. Your purchase and agreement are with the trader, so they can advise you if your order is delayed. Find out more about claiming compensation for missing parcels here.

4.Beware of scams and fakes

Many consumers like to shop around for deals when purchasing online. However, it’s important to know how to spot scams and what to do if you think you’ve been scammed. Before you buy, you can check customer reviews, retailer terms and conditions, and look up details on the Companies House website, to make sure the retailer is above board. If you’re worried you’ve been scammed while shopping online, you can get some information and help here
